It’s the first day of Spring! And, of course the number one thing on my kids’ minds this time of year is SPRING BREAK! It’s a much-needed break between the winter holidays and summer vacation. And I know a lot of families like to travel this time of year. But, what if your family doesn’t have the time, money, or energy this year for an out-of-town getaway? What do you do with the kids for so long?! Here are 10 low-cost ideas for a spring break staycation – without having to drive very far or break the bank.

10 Low-Cost Ideas For A Spring Break Staycation

1. Picnic at the park

This idea is cheap, but can be so fun! Just pack some sandwiches (or lunchables, if you must!), snacks, drinks, and a blanket and head out to the park for some fun. We’ve only done this a few times before, but the kids love it. After you eat, enjoy your time at the park – swinging, sliding, and just being a kid again.

2. Local museum

We’ve visited our local Museum of Science and Discovery, and the kids loved it. We spent a whole day there because there was just so much to do, and they HAD to see it all. With all the fun, they don’t realize they’re learning at the same time. Check to see if there’s a similar museum or traveling exhibit in your area.

3. Aquarium

I lived in Atlanta for 4 years, just when the new Georgia Aquarium was opening. My oldest two have been and were amazed the whole time. We haven’t visited the Miami Seaquarium yet (which is the closest thing to an aquarium near us now). But it’s definitely on our to-do list. As a kid, I just remember being so fascinated by the whales, dolphins, sharks, seals, sea turtles…you name it. The shows were always a big hit for me and I’m sure my little ones will love it all too.

4. Zoo

While we’ve seen a ton of animals at Disney’s Animal Kingdom (we go VERY often!), I’m ashamed to say that my younger 3 had never been to an actual zoo. My brothers and I loved the Miami Metro Zoo (now Zoo Miami) as kids, and this too is on our list for this year. I know how fascinated kids get by animals. It can definitely keep them busy ALL day!

5. Plant a garden

Some beautiful flowers, a vegetable garden – whatever your heart desires! My girls have been dying to plant something! Luckily, we have some planting that needs to be done in our yard, so we’ll be enlisting the help of their little hands!

6. Family movie night

Pick a night to pop popcorn, relax, and watch a movie as a family. You may even decide on multiple movie nights throughout the week. That way, different family member can have their pick at a movie.

7. Beach

We’re lucky enough here in South Florida to live about 20 minutes away from the beach. Pull out the beach chairs, beach balls, shovels, and buckets (don’t forget the sunscreen!). Pack a lunch and drinks and you’re good to go! My kids could stay at the beach for hours if I let them – just going back and forth between the ocean and their sandcastles. The beach is by far one of my favorite places – so it’s a huge bonus for me!

8. Pool

If you don’t really like the beach or just can’t make it there, head over to a local pool. The water can be just as refreshing and relaxing. Just remember water safety for the kids! Check out my post on preventing drowning in children.

9. Local fair

I grew up going to the Dade County Youth Fair in Miami every single year. The fair operators time it well enough so that it usually happens at the same time as our spring break. The rides, the funnel cakes (affectionately known as elephant ears to us!), the roasted corn….mmmmm! We haven’t yet taken our kids because sometimes it can just get crazy for kids their age. Look out for a local fair or amusement park near you, to spend a day or evening this Spring Break.

10. Spend the night at a Hotel

You don’t have to be hours away from home to stay at a hotel. Our family has a favorite hotel where we typically stay after a long day at the beach. Even though it’s only 30 minutes away from home, it’s a nice getaway from our regular routine. It makes us feel like we’re “away” without the major expenses of traveling far from home.

Remember, these ideas can be used for any break from school or even on the weekends. Enjoy your time with your family, and tell me your favorite Spring break staycation ideas below!
