Every year on Mother’s Day, I like to spend some time reflecting on the year that’s passed. This year, I actually sat back and reflected on my 15 years as a mom. A “rollercoaster” is probably the best way for me to describe my journey. Lots of ups and downs, highs and lows.
Here are my 15 lessons learned in 15 years as a mom:
1. Giving your kids a safe place actually makes them more secure and independent in the long run.
2. Appropriate discipline is a must. Letting your kids run the house does them a huge disservice in the long run.
3. You can’t discipline all kids the same.
3. Prioritizing your own needs as a mom is just as important as meeting the needs of your kids. You can’t pour from an empty cup!
4. Kids need one-on-one, undivided attention. But, also benefit from time alone.
5. Physical affection is important to kids – even through the teenage years.
6. Kids can be responsible for chores from a very early age.
7. Family meal time is an awesome bonding time.
8. Moms need mental health days – and kids do, too.
9. It takes a village to raise a child. It’s hard to be everything to your kids.
10. Patience is a must.
11. A clean house is not as important as a fulfilled child.
12. Live in the moment. They grow up way too fast.
13. Some phases of motherhood are tougher than others (newborn, toddler, teen), but there’s still a purpose, and a lesson to be learned from each one.
14. Don’t compare your kids or your motherhood journey to anyone else.
15. As a mom, you’re literally raising the future. So teach your kids kindness, responsibility, accountability, the value of hard work, and how to love others no matter what.
I’m still a work in progress, and still learning every single day. I don’t think you really ever stop learning as a mom. Each new phase brings new challenges. And I’m just trying my best to enjoy the ride!
