This is my first post at Wifey Mommy Doc, where I write about balancing marriage, motherhood, and a career. Welcome to my blog! | Petra McEwan, MD

I want to use this first post to introduce myself . My name is Petra K. McEwan, M.D. (formerly Watson). I’m a Christian Wife, Mom, and Pediatrician. Welcome to my blog, Wifey Mommy Doc!

My Roots

I am originally from Manchester, Jamaica, but grew up in Miami, Florida. My parents were immigrants, and worked hard to give my three brothers and I a fantastic life. My family wasn’t “rich” by any means, but my parents definitely made us feel like we were! We were the family that went to Disney every summer for a week-long vacation. We were able to go on just about every field trip. This wasn’t because we had it. It was because my parents worked hard make things happen for us. That work ethic was transferred down to my brothers and I. So far in my life, I can say that I truly “worked my butt off” because of them.

Education/Experience

I graduated as Valedictorian of my high school class of 500+ (shout out to Miami Northwestern Senior High, Class of 2001), and was admitted to the Honors Program at the University of Florida. I graduated from UF with a B.S. in Business Management (while completing Pre-Med coursework), and moved to Atlanta to complete Medical School at Morehouse School of Medicine. Returning to UF for my Pediatric Residency at Shands Hospital was one of the best choices I’ve made, and I eventually moved back to South Florida. After Residency, my first position was with a very large, busy Pediatric practice which was awesome for the experience, but too demanding of my time when it came to caring for my family. I’ve now settled with a smaller practice, which I love. It allows me to do more of what I love – spend time with my family and educate my patients!

Wifey Mommy

In the midst of all of my schooling, I’ve been married, divorced, and married again – most recently to my middle/high school sweetheart. I was blessed with 5 beautiful children along the way – one in Undergrad, one in Medical School, one in Residency, and two while in Private Practice. At the time of this post, they are ages 15 months to 14 years. Needless to say, I’ve been busy!

Certifications

I am board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and am a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. I take my role as a Pediatrician seriously, but my most important roles for the past several years have been as a Wife and Mother.

How I Do It All

Although my life is very, very busy and I don’t know what each new day will hold, I rest on what the Bible says in Jeremiah 29:11. That verse, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” speaks so much to me
