A few years ago, my sister-in-law introduced me to a pencil sharpener that she claimed was the BEST Sharpener she had ever used. She homeschools her little ones, so I figured she knew what she was talking about, but I was skeptical. How great could a sharpener really be? Aren’t all sharpeners created equal? Don’t you get the same end result – a sharpened pencil?
The sharpener she was raving about was one from Classroom Friendly Supplies. It was relatively inexpensive, so I figured I would give it a try. Honestly, I’m really glad I did because it was well worth it!

Nostalgic
I’m not sure if they still have the “old school” sharpeners in the classroom, but the Classroom Friendly Supplies sharpener looks a lot like those that I remember growing up. It’s not quite as loud and messy as those were, though! Using this sharpener just really takes me back to elementary school! It also doesn’t hang on the wall – it can mount on the edge of a table or desk, but can also be moved around easily. It just has to be held down when it’s being used if it’s not mounted.
Consistently sharp point
The best part about this sharpener is that it consistently produces a sharp point on your pencil, no matter what! It doesn’t just grind away at the lead, leaving you guessing whether or not your pencil will just be eaten, or if you’re actually getting a good point. When using the sharpener, you feel resistance while the sharpener is still working on your pencil, then the resistance stops once it’s achieved a perfect point. It really only takes a few seconds.
Even if you keep turning the handle, it won’t sharpen the pencil any further, and this won’t eat away at your pencil. It’s that simple, and almost fool-proof! No more swallowed-up pencils. I’ve never had a dull point produced by this sharpener, and we’ve been using it in our house for a few years now. I never thought I’d ever say this about a sharpener, but it really is amazing!
Personalize
The sharpeners come in a wide variety of colors (up to 7 now), allowing you to personalize it to your home or classroom. We currently have a black and a purple one in our home.
Easy clean up
The cleanup is simple. It has a tray that collects the pencil shavings, and it just needs to be emptied every now and then when it gets full. But, while it’s sharpening and collecting the shavings, it really is mess-free.
Few down-sides
One down-side is that there are clamps on the sharpener that are used to hold your pencil in place while it’s being sharpened. Sometimes those clamps can leave “bite marks” in your pencil. This has actually only happened to a few of our pencils over the years. If you absolutely love your pencil’s cosmetic appeal and will go into a conniption if your pencils have tiny bite marks in them, then I don’t recommend this sharpener for you! But to me, the benefit of a consistently sharp pencil outweighs a few occasional small bite marks on the pencils.
Another down-side is that the sharpener can be a little noisy. Not quite as noisy as the old-school classroom sharpeners, but it’s still not quiet! Again, the benefit outweighs this in my mind!
Lastly, this sharpener can’t sharpen the jumbo pencils that are sometimes used in preschool. I don’t think this size pencil is always necessary in my opinion anyways!
Honestly, I’ll take any of these “down-sides” for a consistently sharp pencil every time. My kids love our sharpeners, and they’re pretty easy for them to use. We haven’t had any problems with them over the past few years, and I’m glad we made the investment!
