Are you a busy mom with kids that are craving your attention? Keep reading for a few tips on finding time for your kids as a working mom.
Do you have a hard time finding time for your kids? It’s easy to get so wrapped up in the “busy-ness” of life, that you end up not truly spending quality time with the ones you love. You may be “together” during the morning rush and the quick school drop offs and pickups. Then there’s the shuttling around to sports practices and activities. The rush at the end of the night to eat dinner and get everyone off to bed. (That’s how it can be in my own home). But how much time are you truly spending focused on and being present with your children?

Benefits of finding time for your kids
There are so many benefits to spending time with your kids. Being more present with your kids will strengthen your relationship with them and create a happier home in general. Your kids will know and trust that they can rely on you and know you’re there for them (rather than believing that mommy’s too busy for them). While spending time with your kids, you’ll get to know and understand them better. Quality time has also been shown to decrease their risk of anxiety, depression, and other mental illnesses.
Finding time for your kids as a working mom
As a busy mom, here are my best tips for finding time for your kids:
1. Put it on your schedule.
Make an appointment with your kids just like you would make an appointment for everything else. Try your best not to cancel or reschedule your appointment. Block out the time in your schedule and make it the most important thing in the world at that moment.
2. Don’t overcommit.
This goes for your schedule as well as your kids’ schedule. Minimize your schedule and theirs so that you have time to spend together. Start saying “no” to invitations if your commitments are taking away from your time together.
3. Family dinner time.
Make an effort to sit down together as a family to eat dinner on a regular basis. I know this may not work with your schedule every night, but even if it’s a few nights a week, make it a part of your routine. Make it a comfortable time that allows everyone to relax and decompress from their day.
4. Family vacations or staycations.
Family vacations can be a great time to get away and focus on each other. But, of course, you don’t have to get away to have fun. Plan a “staycation” at a local hotel, or just a day of fun activities together.
5. Play with your kids.
I know how easy it is to just sit and watch your kids as they play with their toys or at the playground. But the next time you go, get out there and play with them! Build a Lego tower, play a board game, or jump on the swings with them at the park. Kids get a kick out of seeing you play just like them and giving them your undivided attention.
6. No electronic time.
We’re living in a world today where even my 3 year-old knows how to use an iPad without any help. And, boy, has he gotten addicted! Many times, we all get so wrapped up in our devices and communicating with people we don’t even know so well online that we forget to pay attention to the people right in front of us. Dedicate some time on a regular basis to be “no electric time”. Whether it’s a whole day once a week, a certain time each day, or an entire weekend. Ditch the electronics and just focus on each other.
7. Bedtime.
Another great time to wind down and spend some time together. Set up a bedtime routine for all your kids (no matter their age) and do something together. Even if it’s just a few minutes to talk about their day, read to them or have them read to you. Again, this it a great time to give your kids your undivided attention.
Your kids will be out of the house before you know it. It’s so important to spend quality time with them now. There are so many benefits to spending time with your kids, and the most important is that it improves your relationship with them. What parent doesn’t want that? Quality time doesn’t always happen naturally. Use these tips to be more intentional about finding time with our kids as a working mom.
