It’s so fun to develop traditions as a family! They make your family unique, and gives everyone something special to look forward to. Besides Christmas, Easter is one of the most important holidays for our family. We’re Christian, and believe the true meaning of Easter is the celebration of the death, burial, and resurrection of our Savior Jesus Christ. But, we still let our kids enjoy the “typical” Easter celebrations. We just try our best not to let it mask what we’re truly celebrating. Here’s a few of our family Easter traditions.

Easter Baskets

Each of our kids gets an Easter basket, no matter how old they are. They’re filled with things that enjoy. I try to have them as personalized as possible. I’ve been making the baskets myself the past few years, and they’ve turned out better than the pre-packaged ones, surprisingly! Check out my post on Healthy Easter Baskets for some tips.

Easter Egg Hunt

Years ago, we used to participate in local Easter egg hunts in our community. They just seemed to get too crowded and not as rewarding for the kids as they used to be. So, for the past two years, though, we’ve just had an Easter egg hunt at our house. My husband and I hide the eggs, we invite family over, and the kids have a ball finding eggs in the weirdest of places. Being the frugal person that I am, once the kids empty out the egg contents, I save the plastic eggs for the next year!

Dyeing eggs

I’ve been dyeing eggs for Easter since I was a kid, and my kids really enjoy it! Nothing fancy. We just buy the kits from the store, boil the eggs, and dye them. We try to get different variations of the kits every year – with different colors, glitter, stickers, etc. It’s a fun activity, and the kids love to work together in the moment.

Family Pictures

Just like Christmas for us, every year, we also take pictures together on Easter. You’d think that as the kids get older, it’s something that I’d have to force them and my husband to do. But it’s actually something they all look forward to us doing as a family!

Church

Of course, there’s no Easter without a church service! I can’t remember ever missing an Easter Sunday service. My church in Miami, where my mother still attends, puts on an Easter Cantata every year, with songs and a re-enactment of the life, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. I never missed it as a child, and I try to still take my kids to see it when we can.

Easter story

Another tradition that we carry over from Christmas. I make it a point every year to read the story of Easter to our children, and explain to them what we are celebrating. Christmas is a little easier for the younger ones to understand, but I feel that they understand a little more every year. We use the same Bedtime Bible Story book that I got during my baby shower for my 14 year old everytime!

Dinner

We usually have a quiet dinner at home, as a family to round out our Easter Sunday.

Rice Krispie Easter Eggs

This is a fun dessert that I started making with the kids a few years ago. We make Rice Krispie treats ourselves, then form them into the shape of an Easter egg. The “eggs” are hollowed on the inside so we can fill them with treats. Not the healthiest of desserts, but they’re fun to make and eat! Click here for the recipe.
