Moms are bearing so much of the burden of this social distancing recommendation right now. Yes, businesses are struggling and our healthcare workers are on the front lines fighting Coronavirus COVID-19 everyday – and deserve a whole lot of credit for it. But, with entire families now restricted to their homes, moms all over the world are having to step up even more than usual. It’s a different kind of struggle.
We have to make sure our kids and husbands have what they need while they’re home for this extended time. Extra groceries, meals, cleaning, and dishes. The kids have to do hours of schoolwork at home. Most moms also have to double as teachers, to explain what their kids don’t understand. Plus, you may be a mom who – like me – still has to head into work everyday. While I’m at work, I’m still making sure my family’s taken care of from a distance. All the while wishing I could just be home with them during this crazy time.
It’s a lot.
A lot to add on to our already busy plates. Enough to tip us way off of the balance we thought we had just a month ago. Luckily, things are calmer in the sense that we can’t really go anywhere or do much outside the home. Activities are cancelled and our calendars are erased. But, that still doesn’t make up for the worry and anxiety we feel in this uncertain time.
So, what do you do?

How do we, as moms, succeed at taking care of ourselves while social distancing? How do we make it through this pandemic without losing our minds? Here are a few tips:
Get dressed every morning
I know you probably aren’t leaving the house much right now. But, it’s still a great idea to get up and get dressed every morning. Studies have shown that you’ll be happier, more confident, and more productive when you’re dressed vs being in PJ’s all day. On days where you just really aren’t feeling it – spend some extra time on your make up, put on your favorite outfit, and put your hair in your favorite style. It’ll do wonders for your mood and your day overall. I suggest the same for your kids!
Stay up on your physical health
It’s so easy to let your own needs fall to the side when you’re caring for everyone else 24/7. Aim for at least 7 hours of sleep everyday. Sneak in a midday nap if you can. Even though gyms are closed right now, try to fit in some physical activity everyday. It could be a walk, run, yoga or weight-lifting session. Also, make sure the day doesn’t fly by without eating a few good meals yourself. Sure, you’re allowed to have your secret indulgences from time to time – just to keep you happy right now. But, still aim for healthy, balanced meals as often as possible. Now might be a good time to put a dinner rotation into play if you have a little extra time. Online grocery delivery can be a lifesaver to get the things you need without risking your health in the grocery store.
Do something you enjoy
This may take a little creativity since we’re all a little restricted right now. But, don’t just focus on planning activities to keep your kids busy. Think of even one of your favorite activities, and sneak in some time to do it. Whether it’s reading, binge-watching a Netflix series, watching your favorite movie, baking – whatever it is. Find a way to make yourself smile on a regular basis, and to keep your individuality in the midst of all of this. It may mean waking up a little earlier or going to sleep later than everyone else. But carve on some ”me-time” on a regular basis.
Give yourself a make-over
If you’re stuck at home, now might be the time to try our a new look. Whether it’s a new make up style, new hair style or color (just don’t do something that can’t be fixed if you don’t like it!). Give yourself and manicure and pedicure. Try nail colors you’ve never tried before. Have some fun, and spend some extra time making yourself look even more beautiful – even if you aren’t going anywhere!
Stay in touch
Even though you can’t have much physical contact right now, you can still stay in touch with your family and friends. I highly recommend it, so you don’t lose your mind! Use FaceTime, videoconferencing, or just a plain ‘ole phone call to stay in touch. Get your feelings out to those you can trust. Talking out your fears, anxieties, and uncertainties can help you to get a little relief during this time. But, you don’t even have to talk about the current state of the world. Check in to see how everyone else is doing. Find anything else to talk about to take your mind off of things if you need to.
Spend time with your hubby
Don’t forget about your marriage! Now’s the time to get lots of love and affection if you’re both home. Spend as much time with your hubby as you can now, before you get busy again! It’s a great time to make your marriage stronger.
Get outside
Research has shown that fresh air can really help to boost your mood. Be sure to get out at least once a day. It’ll help your kids get their wiggles out, too. It’s a win-win for everyone!
Give yourself a break
Being at home with your family can be an awesome. But, it can also be a little overwhelming for you, as the wife and mom. So, be sure you’re getting a “time out” every now and then to rest and recharge. Switch off child care duties with your hubby so you can get a break. And be sure everyone’s pitching in to help take care of the house.
With all of that being said, I want you to truly “give yourself a break!” It’s a crazy time for everyone, so it really is OK to lower your expectations. Your house doesn’t have to be spic and span (and it likely won’t be). Your meals don’t have to be perfectly balanced ALL the time. You may not be productive everyday, and your kids may not always get their schoolwork done on time. It’s all OK. Don’t beat yourself up about it.
I know how quickly the days slip by when you’re busy taking care of everyone else. It’s so easy to put your needs off. I’ve looked up some days, not realizing it’s already noon and I haven’t had breakfast yet. But, I encourage you to really make an effort take care of yourself before life gets busy again. Make yourself a priority right along with your kids and hubby. I know everyone needs you, but you’re no good to anyone else if you don’t take care of yourself.
You can’t pour from an empty cup.
