Father’s Day is Sunday! If you haven’t yet made plans for treating the dad in your life this Father’s Day, I recommend you get to it! Whether it’s your own dad or grandfather, brothers, uncles, boyfriends, or husbands. It’s important that we show the dads in our life how much they’re appreciated. It can’t just be all about Mother’s Day! 😊

My husband’s been an awesome father to my youngest three kids and step-father to my oldest two. He’s our counselor, protector, and provider. He’s sacrificed a whole lot of time and money for us, and it’s kinda hard to repay him. On Father’s Day, we try to show him our appreciation, though he’s not huge on “gifts” all the time.

So, here are a few of his favorites, that I pass on as suggestions for treating the dad in your life:

Cook his favorite meal

Food is definitely the way to my husband’s heart! Whether it’s breakfast, lunch, or dinner – it doesn’t matter. He loves good, home-cooked food. So, if the dad in your life is like my husband, treat him to a nice spread for Father’s Day. Have your kids help out in the kitchen, too! It’ll mean that much more to him. The restaurants can get busy this time of the year anyways, so save time and money and add a personal touch by cooking at home.

Do a task for him that he loathes

If the dad in your life’s task list includes mowing the lawn, doing yard work, washing the car, taking out the trash, or fixing something in the house – do it for him this week! If you’re not able to do it yourself, hire someone else to do it. My husband does all of the above, so we’ll try to give him a break this week.

Buy him tickets to an event

My husband is a huge sports fan – especially football. It’s hard to stand in the way of him and a good football game. We already have Dolphins and University of Miami football season tickets (yes, our Fall is very, very busy!). But, he also loves other sports and has other interests. I encourage you to hone in on the interests of the dad in your life, and treat him to a ticket – on you.

Do his favorite activity with him

Pay attention to what the dad in your life loves to do, and do it with him! Little things like throwing a football around, swimming, grilling, watching TV, or going to a movie – any small thing, when done with someone he loves, can make the dad in your life feel awesome.

Make something for him

No matter how much of a tough guy the dad in your life is, he’ll always have a soft spot for something personally made for him – especially if it’s made by his kids or grandkids. My husband has piles of art drawings and trinkets made by the kids that he’s saved over the years. I remember my dad doing the same thing when I was young, and he still cherishes anything he receives from his grandkids, no matter how small. So, get some help from the kids and make something! It can be a drawing, art project, card, or even just a hand-written letter. Gifts like these are more personal and much more memorable.

Give him some kid-free time

Though my husband absolutely loves spending Father’s Day with the kids, he also likes to be able to spend time alone. This time alone can help the dad in your life catch up on things he needed to get done, or to simply sleep (like my hubby). Self-care is just as important to dads as it is to us, as moms. We all need days like this, and sometimes a break is all the dad in your life really wants!
